With the many video recordings of the current BP Oil-spill in the Gulf coast, I wonder why cannot that cap be simply closed off with either some sort of lid or some sort of mechanical "clamp" to close off the leak?

The way I see that single cap, why cannot the lid be removed and then capped or closed with some sort of "lid"?
